My name is Michaella Ashlee Racaza and I’m First! I am a first-generation Filipino immigrant going to a university. I moved from the Philippines when I was 13 years old in 2018. Upon starting my first year in an American school, culture shock came knocking at my door. I got looks for doing something different than my peers or not understanding norms. However, as I progress academically, I realize the American educational society is in my favor. In my previous school in the Philippines, which was a highly religious and strict school, the teachings were not effective for me. In America, my teachers encourage me to ask questions and do in-class work, as opposed to simply giving out homework.
