As a 3-time first-gen college graduate, I take pride in my academic accomplishments, but those accomplishments do not solely define who I am now, or who I want to be. As an Afro-Indigenous scholar, activist, and servant leader, I seek to be an advocate for the historically marginalized, speak the language of the unheard, and contribute to the liberation of people of color. To my fellow first-gen scholars, do not forget that you are not alone when going through your college journey. You have community, resources, and support that are meant to help you be successful. Ask for help; it is a sign of strength, not weakness. Embrace your first-gen identity proudly and do not let anyone take away your talents, gifts, and joy.
